Shank covers

IMG_0761Next, shank covers were created using the boot insole pattern. These were made out of a relatively bendable but sturdy material, whose aim is to keep the shank in place for a long time. Occasionally shanks can come loose and break inside the shoe, so this is just an extra precaution to make sure that they last for a long time! The insoles were taken off the last, the covers glued on with two coats of glue, then sanded both around the edges to the same shape as the insole, and also over the top of them and at their ‘end’ so that the transition between the insole and the cover wasn’t bumpy, but as smooth as possible, and then the whole thing was again tacked onto the last, ready for the next step.
